A boutique hotel hugging the cliffs of Santorini, the biggest island in the Cyclades, Astra Apartments and Suites is the perfect Greek island hideaway. Rooms are all high ceilings, arty ornaments and candles perched on every available surface; add in the giant his ’n’ hers shower, a four-poster bed and an outrageously comfortable sofa in the lounge area and you have a ready-made excuse for permanent room service. Book well in advance to stay in high season, to avoid disappointment.

Rates: €250–€800; €1,500–€2,000 for the private villa.
Check-out: Midday, but the hotel does have a hospitality suite for early arrivals and late check-outs.
Facilities: Swimming pool, book exchange, free Internet access, spa.
Hotel closed: November–March inclusive.
Also: Wedding planner available. There's a three-night minimum stay in all suites. The hotel charges €60 for each extra person (€80 in high season).

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: Serving a creative take on Mediterranean classics, Astra's restaurant allows you to dine in style under the stars, looking out over the Aegean. Breakfast is served on your balcony or by the pool.
Dress code: Blissfully blasé.
Top table: Ask the restaurant to provide dinner on your own private balcony for an intimate evening à deux.
Last orders: Drinks: 11pm.
Room service: Light meals available until midnight.
Hotel bar: Poolside drinks available 3pm–11pm.
