- Maison Felisa’s aromatically named rooms are inspired by the essential oils used in the hotel’s spa. Parfum de Jasmin, Eau de Rose and Bois de Santal are the most spacious, with Jacuzzi-fitted open-plan bathrooms, and Italian linen laundered in flower-scented water (you can even buy them if they prove too hard to leave behind), and snuggly mohair blankets. Both the Eau de Rose and Parfum de Jasmin rooms have balustraded balconies looking out onto the gardens and pool, making them our top picks. Fleur d’Oranger gets a vote too – as well as its striking colour scheme, and the Buddha sat in the original fireplace, the fact it’s north-facing makes it the coolest room in the house – a godsend in the summertime heat.
- Packing tips
- A stack of trashy books to plough through while reclining in the poolside garden. If you’re nesting here for longer than a week, bring your driving licence so you can hire a car.

- Philippe, the hotel’s Swiss owner, exercises his talents as a masseur in the spa, where you can sign up for a pan-global variety of wellness treatments, as well as a lesson in Isa’s distinctive brand of intuitive fusion cookery.

Maison Felisa’s easygoing Swiss owners, Isa and Philippe, have very much stamped their personalities on the little bed and breakfast, with a warm and welcoming design scheme that makes much of cosy pastels and natural stone. The spa’s massage treatments come from the capable hands of Philippe (as do the daily morning yoga sessions), and Isa is the queen of the open-plan kitchen that serves as the hotel’s heart.

- Shaded by trees and the hotel’s rocky walls, and surrounded by fresh, green lawns, the stone-lined pool is perfect for cooling off in the late afternoon.

- The hotel serves organic food, recycles extensively, and is a member of the Action Carbone offsetting scheme.

- On Friday and Saturday nights, Isa takes to the open-plan island kitchen to cook a combination of Provençal, Oriental and Indian dishes that you can enjoy either in the gardens or indoors on the lantern-lit table (€28 a person).

- At one of the kitchen’s canteen tables, dining with Philippe and Isa – it feels like an informal dinner party at a friend’s.

- Maison Felisa’s sedate, intimate atmosphere isn’t ideal for youngsters, but bedroom Lait d’Amande has a built-in sofa that could double as an extra bed if you’ve a little Smith in tow.
