Hotel Restaurant

Dolomièu has a festive feel, with red cushions and bushy wreathes on the walls in one section. The chef attempts to source all food locally, with fish coming straight from the mountain’s waterways. Look out for inventive takes on steamed lobster (serving it with guacamole, lime and tacos), trout sashimi and ravioli filled with braised pigeon.

Worth getting out of bed for

Snow fans can get their regular fix of skiing, snow-shoeing and husky-assisted sledging. The slopes around Madonna di Campiglio cater for all levels, from greenhorn to guru, and you can hire skis out from Sport Elite School (www.sporteliteschool.com). For water-based activity, try River Tours (+39 34 7442 8020; www.suedtirol-river-tours.com), who organise local rafting, canyoning and kayaking. Shoppers should hit Casa Cozzio (+39 04 6544 1337) for antiques and Lorenzi (+39 04 6544 1233) to marvel at the offbeat selection on the shelves (luxury shaving foam, Dyptique products, Swiss Army knives and jewellery).

Local restaurants

Refuel at Chalet Fiat (+39 33 393 8030) when out and about on the slopes for a lunch with a view.

Local cafés

In Madonna di Campiglio, sit at Nardis Café (+39 04 6544 0407) in the square and have an ice-cream or aperitif.

Trains

Trenitalia (www.trenitalia.com) trains link up the region, with direct services running between Verona and Bolzano in around two hours.

Automobiles

From both Balzano and Trento, expect the drive to the hotel to take around an hour and a half. There’s free parking when you arrive.

Mr & Mrs Smith have just returned from a stay at this boutique hotel in the Dolomites, and as soon as they've unpacked their ski jumpers and scarves, a full account of their luxury countryside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick snapshot of DV Boutique Hotel & Spa in South Tyrol…

Even in high summer, it’s easy to get into the festive spirit at snug sanctuary DV Boutique Hotel. This cosy cabin sits close to the slopes in mountainous Madonna di Campiglio, a resort for seasoned skiers as well as beginners. From the outside, the timber structure is a classic chalet vision, but with a turreted twist.

Reclaimed wood lines the floors, walls and ceilings, with animal hides laid out here and there. The pine-covered restaurant will cater to the heartiest mountain appetite, with interesting dishes rolled out by the daring chef (he’s currently trialling alpine-fresh trout sashimi). Past the lobby, there’s an inviting lounge with a squashy sofa, patterned rug and wood-burning fire. There’s even a cigar room, for smoking that’s sheltered from the snow. The main aim is to keep guests warm and comforted from the snowy outdoors. Come in, dust off your boots and get defrosting. DV Boutique Hotel & Spwill take care of everything else.

We loved

We loved the wonderful service and attention from the staff, the cosy rooms (small but quaint) and the peaceful wellness area. The included massage was wonderful and the parting gift was also very nice. We would love to go back!

Don’t expect

We found the location a bit off the beaten path, but for those looking for a getaway, it's just right.

We loved

This is a beautifully designed boutique hotel, with professional, friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was very enjoyable with a wide variety of sweet and savoury food. Top marks for the Restaurant's Pesto and Carbonara pasta, and it's 1 star Michelin 'Menu Degustation'! Nordic Walking and a relaxing massage were a welcome part of our package. I highly recommend it. I would not hesitate to return.

Don’t expect

Restaurant's desserts are delicious, however, I found their set price of 12 euros a little excessive.

We loved

From the website, DV Boutique sets the bar pretty high… when you actually stay there and experience the cool, calm, cosy interiors, second-to-none service, breathtaking spa and amazing food, your expectations are totally exceeded. It over delivers at every turn. We were there at the end of the season so there were very few guests but I get the impression that irrespective of how many people there were, the same experience would be given.

Don’t expect

It would have been amazing to be given a little parting gift – very few hotels do this but it leaves you walking on air when they do.
