INTERIORS: Room service

Smith interiors genius Emily Chalmers knows how to make your boudoir hotel-beautiful

In the world of interiors, minimalism reigned for years, whether in reaction to the overindulgent Eighties, the legendary loo-roll dolly or just older relatives’ chintzy taste. Things have changed recently, though, and that tyranny of paring down is diminishing – most of us prefer to dress our homes up instead, and some of our most beloved hotels are getting more and more outrageously decadent. At Mr & Mrs Smith, we heartily encourage turning the humble home into a private palace. The best place to start? The sexiest room in the house, of course – the bedroom…

A chandelier creates drama and will make you feel like royalty every time you go to bed: the darker the glass and the more arms it has, the better. Add a dimmer switch so you can make your boudoir lighting as soft and shady as you like. Caravan stocks the little black numbers, and larger versions – choose between five-arm, nine-arm and 14-arm chandeliers. Black glass chandeliers look good whether they're on or off, and that can only be a good thing. If you’re on the high street, visit the likes of Heal's and Christopher Wray. Online, Cameron Peters is well worth a visit. Always invest in good bulbs – go for the specialist ‘bohemian’ shape (flame) if you want the best (also available at Christopher Wray), and choose that wattage carefully.

Add opulent wallpaper: it's the simplest and most effective way to give a room instant high-luxe impact, and there are some beautiful designs around since it came back into vogue. Osborne & Little has produced quality papers for years, and the new designs are rich and oversized – just the thing for a statement wall or behind a bedhead. Cole & Son has also been drawing from its extensive archive and is renowned for bringing the outside in, with a feast of flowers and foliage. Turn to Designers Guild if you fancy some great colours and patterns.

Accessorise with tactile fabrics on cushions and throws, and don’t be afraid to mix textures and patterns. And roll that theme over the floorboards, too – there’s nothing like a thick soft pile to sink naked toes into. Even John Lewis knows its reindeer from its cow these days.

Get moody with deep, dark shades: a chest of drawers painted black will look a lot more fabulous than its bright and easy pine counterpart; a dark-stained floor and deep-pile rugs will make yours a really hedonistic haven. Visit Caravan for hand-painted chests of drawers; Homebase will happily furnish you with woodstain.

Dress your bed with Egyptian cotton and curl up under a cashmere blanket for soft, sweet luxury – your bedroom needs to feel good as well as look good. Head to The White Company and get into higher-than-high thread-count cottons, or try Peacock Blue for crisp luxury; Brora will provide you with cashmere-lined cosiness.

And if you’re really pushing that decadent boat out, why not get a roll-top bath installed in the corner or at the foot of the bed? You need never leave your bedroom…

The often eccentric and extraordinary

hand-printed wallcoverings and fabrics from these Glasgow-based artists will brighten up any house. Or should that be 'hoose'? The name, in case you were wondering, comes from the Robert Burns poem 'To a Mouse' (pronounced 'moose').
