HOW TO... throw a Frisbee

The easiest throw to master is the CLASSIC, the Frisbee equivalent of the tennis backhand, says Jay Woods.

01

STEP 1: THE HOLD

Loosely grip the Frisbee with your thumb on the top and your four fingers in the rim underneath.

02

STEP 2: THE STANCE

If you’re right-handed, stand at an angle to the receiver, with your right foot and right shoulder towards them. (If you’re left-handed… well, figure it out.)

03

STEP 3: THE WIND-UP

Wind your throwing arm in towards your body at chest height, curling your wrist in slightly. Keep your feet rooted and pivot your body at the hips, turning your front shoulder away from the receiver. Like a coiled spring, you’re now ready to throw…

STEP 4: THE THROW

As with most ‘throwing sports’, aim is always more accurate if one keeps an eye on where one wants to throw. Keeping the Frisbee horizontal, whip your throwing arm out towards the receiver. At the last point of the throw, uncurl your wrist. This gives the Frisbee the flick it needs to keep it spinning.

You’ll get better accuracy and distance if you keep STEP 3 and STEP 4 as a fluid motion.

As always, practice makes perfect.
