Luxury holidays in Imerovigli

On the surface, Santorini isn’t geared up for singletons, with its bridal-white buildings (often accessorised with actual brides taking photoshoots) and rows of coupled-up terraces awaiting breathtaking sunsets. Imerovigli is deep in honeymoon territory with its glamorous bars and upscale stays, plus its dramatic viewpoints for Skaros Rock soaring out of the sapphire-blue caldera waters. Set roughly in the middle of the island, it’s a good point from which to explore bustling Oia in the north or historic Akrotiri in the south, or take a tour of the island’s vineyards to get well acquainted with the local Assyrtiko. But, it’s not all getting lost in each other’s eyes and sloshed on wine: follow the Ekklisia Theoskepasti to see some ancient treasures, and wander up to the much-photographed Agios Nikolaos church – just be sure to make it back before sundown.

When to go

Expect to sacrifice a little privacy on your terrace from June to September, when lovers arrive in droves. Some businesses shut in the off-season, but spring and late autumn are more peaceful.

Getting there

  • Planes

Santorini Airport is a 15-minute drive from Imerovigli. There are direct flights from major hubs in Europe, but many stop over in Athens first.
  • Automobiles

If you plan to hang the ‘do not disturb’ sign on your door, only scuttling from your room for sundowners, then there’s no need for a car. However, to save on taxi costs, wheels will come in handy for driving end to end on the island and stopping off to see black- and red-sand beaches. For something a bit more thrilling, get around by quad bike – available to hire in Imerovigli.
