Luxury holidays in Downtown Los Angeles

Oft overlooked in favour of ritzier neighbourhoods, Downtown Los Angeles has had a renaissance in recent years, drawing eyes away from the hills and returning them to the city’s heart. Sure, it lacks the polish and perfect teeth of Hollywood and Beverly Hills, but this ’hood has history and artistic talent, home to Gallery Row, the Fashion District and the Historic Core. Grand art deco buildings from the Twenties and Thirties – Downtown's golden age – still line the older streets, and the centre is full of buzzy restaurants, bars and boutiques. Bonus point: it’s one of the only neighbourhoods in LA that’s pedestrian friendly.

When to go

Like the rest of southern California, LA is a year-round destination, but temperatures are at their most reliable between May and September.

Getting there

  • Planes

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a 30-minute drive from Downtown.
  • Automobiles

They say the car is king here, so you may want to think about hiring one unless you plan on sticking solely to the Downtown area. All the major rental firms are available at LAX.
