Best picnic spot

Make the most of your scenic surroundings and have a picnic in the meadows surrounding the property.

Best beaches

Pilone 1 is a sandy beach surrounded by pine trees. It’s a great snorkelling spot, but comes without sun loungers and gets busy in the summer. Pilone 2 is wide expanse of sand with a watch tower in the distance, and is particularly suited to young children as there is a great stretch of shallow water. Torre Canne has cafes and restaurants along the beach and there are sunbeds and umbrellas to hire. There’s also a small fresh water lake on one part of the beach. Rosa Marina is a sandy beach set on a small estate; though the beach is open to the public, access can be tricky (you can’t park on the beach). There’s a cool bag and a sun-tent in the Utility Room.

Best walks

Stop off at Villa Marina on the way to or from the beach. The pretty marina is famous for its ice cream, cakes and glamorous locals enjoying the passegiata (the traditional dusk sociable stroll).

Shopping

Look at Trullo Fico’s street maps, which are marked with the area’s best shops. Forget supermarkets – pick up fresh local produce from the independent shops. Ostuni has a fantastic market on Saturday morning selling a vast array of amazing food, as well as clothes, books and flowers.

Activities

Pack a picnic and go trulli-hunting in the countryside of Ostuni, Cisternino or Martina Franca. Ceglie Messapica is a mediaeval town famed for its 14th-century castle and its gastronomy. The town is accessed via three gateways set in the defensive walls, and it’s just five minutes from the property. Be sure to admire the Piazza Plebiscito with its grand clock tower, and sample gelataria from one of the street cafes. Have lunch at Arrosteria Borgo Antico (+39 333 115 4888) at 11 via G.Mele. The small, family-run restaurant serves wonderful antipasti and hearty meat dishes. Learn about olive oil production at the Museo dell’ Olio d’Oliva (+39 080 441 3471) at 5 Contrada Sant’Angelo in Fasano, but be aware that the museum is only open Friday–Saturday, 5.30pm–8pm. Admire the staggering Baroque architecture at Francavilla Fontana, in particular the Palazzo Imperiali and the Chiese Matrici. Head to Martina Franca; enter via the spectacular Potra di Santo Stefano arch and, if you’re here on a summer evening, admire the glamorous Italians taking their stroll at dusk. Martina Franca is famed for its palazzi, Baroque architecture and winding alleyways; it’s also a gastronomic gem, so sample cheese, pasta, cold meats (capocollo is the specialty) and the local white wine. Martina Franca is also Puglia’s musical hub, so check to see if there are any concerts taking place.

Smith Tip

Trullo Fico has an orchard full of fruit trees (peach, fig, cactus fruit and almond), which you can treat as your own; pick some ripe figs and pair them with a local cheese (a gorgonzola and mascarpone mix) and slivers of parma ham. Mobiles work best at the further end of the swimming pool.
