Stylish self-catering stay Apartment 401 in Melbourne boasts an unbeatable location in the Central Business District's iconic Majorca Building, perched above the buzzy cafés, bars and boutiques of atmospheric laneways Degraves Street and Centre Place. You'll feel like a local when you rock up at this open-plan, fourth-floor flat, with its window-flanked kitchen-diner-living area and double bedroom. The exterior may be art deco glam (care of renowned architect Harry Norris), but indoors is more Scandi simple, with sleek modern touches. It's the perfect pied-à-terre for urban nomads.

  • Rates information Room rates include tea, coffee, milk, sugar and other basics, as well as tax. For stays of more than seven nights, rates drop to AU$220 a night; weekend packages with a bottle of wine and 4pm late check-out cost AU$600 for two nights.
  • Ideal for A couple wanting to be in the heart of the action; stylish solo travellers. Kids aren't allowed.

  • Property style A refurbished contemporary one-bedroom apartment on the fourth-floor of a historic art deco building, with a charming old-fashioned lift. Large metal-framed windows and polished timber floors add to the heritage feel.
  • Grounds The Majorca Building is slap in the heart of Melbourne, with an ornate front door giving onto the street. You can soak up striking city views from the generous windows or tiny Juliet balcony, and the lobby features photo-worthy deco details.
  • Minimum hire Two-night minimum hire. Three-night minimum stays (and higher AU$350 a night rates) apply over Christmas, New Year, Easter and special city events such as the Australian Open Tennis, Grand Prix and Spring Racing Carnival.
  • Children This hotel is better suited to couples - leave the children at home!
  • Booking process A credit card deposit of 50 per cent is required to secure the booking, with the balance due two weeks prior to arrival. Full payment is required to secure bookings made less than four weeks in advance. You'll be met at the property and handed the keys, as there are no staff on site (check-in any time from 2pm to 10pm). Cancellation charges apply.
  • Also Smoking is not allowed; nor are parties or pets. Airport transfers can be provided at extra cost.

Floor plan

  • Perched on the fourth-floor, Apartment 401 is spacious, light-filled and open-plan.
  • Bedrooms Set off the lounge of this open-plan apartment, the light, airy bedroom can be closed off with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors for added privacy. A queen-size bed with an oversized charcoal-grey headboard is flanked by a pair of black metal vintage filing cabinets doubling as bedside tables, topped by industrial-style anglepoise lamps. White walls, dark carpet and neutral cushions and throws complement the simple furniture. On one side a metal-framed glass door gives onto a tiny, Parisian-style Juliet balcony; on the other a compact corridor of fitted storage cupboards leads to a white mosaic-tiled bathroom with a bath and a shower over the tub, which can also be accessed from the hallway.
  • Kitchen

    The pale wood kitchen forms part of a seamless space with the dining and living area, and is well equipped with two work stations and ample storage. Alongside a gas oven and hotplates, you'll find a handy microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and some funky retro and modern tableware.

  • Living room Lined with windows overlooking Degraves Street's hip bars and cafés, the living area adjoins the kitchen-diner. A comfy two-seater sofa and armchair are joined by an Eames-style lounge chair and low-slung coffee-table.
  • Dining room

    Between the kitchen and living areas, there's a simple wooden dining table, surrounded by four white contemporary chairs.

  • Other A small laundry area by the door contains a washing-machine and dryer.

In the know

Eating and drinking

The kitchen is kitted out with an oven and hob, small fridge-freezer, kettle, cafetiere, microwave, dishwasher, washing-machine and dryer, as well as retro-chic tableware. Outside catering isn't available, but you can easily whip up a meal here.

Housekeeping

The apartment is professionally cleaned before and after all stays and mid-way through stays of more than one week. Additional servicing is available on request for AU$20 an hour, with a two-hour minimum.

Entertainment

A TV, DVD player and Sony CD player/radio provide multi-media distractions, with a small selection of CDs including Café del Mar and Brasilian tunes. Books about Melbourne and city magazines on the coffee-table are also worth a flick.

Provided

Foodie basics, including Vittoria coffee, Dilmah tea, milk, sugar, salt and pepper. Lindt chocolates and flowers make you feel welcome. There's also bed linen, bath robes, an iron, ironing board, laundry facilities, a hairdryer and a landline phone.
