Gavin Turk

Great British artist

Gavin lives and works in Hackney with his Mrs Smith, Deborah Curtis, and their three children. In 2007, they embarked on The House of Fairy Tales project together originally to entertain their kids, and then with a troupe of artists, aiming to further community education projects through art. Turk has exhibited at the Tate Modern to the Istanbul Biennial and the Royal Academy as well as Venice’s Biennale, and his work has earned him a reputation as an artist who questions the nature and values of identity, pop culture, and art itself, and his sculptures, bronzes, paintings and prints have been celebrated as some of the most visually striking of our time. When a British artist is famously one of the Young British Artists (YBAs) alongside Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, we can be confident that he and his Mrs Smith are ideal to judge what gives a Smith hotel wow.
