Beaumont House
Style Cape crusader
Setting 1930s decor in leafy suburbia
This stylish 1930s house in the leafy Cape Town suburb of Upper Claremont has more debonair, early 20th-century charm than an Evelyn Waugh character strolling rakishly through an exhibition of Lee Miller photographs. The interiors of Beaumont House hotel are all pale walls and cream and white French-inspired furniture, with lovely, well-chosen touches – a grand piano in the salon, black-and-white canvases in the bathroom – that combine to make you feel as though you’re staying in someone’s home.

In the know
Our favourite rooms
The Mountain Suite, on the first floor of the main house, is the epitome of light, airy 1930s decor, with dark-oak parquet floors and tasteful French-inspired furniture. It also has a private balcony that offers views of Table Mountain. Alternatively, go for one of the two Garden/Pool Suites, in a new building away from the main house. Private and peaceful, these come with their own covered patios.
Packing tips
Bring a guide to South African wine – you’re only five minutes from the Constantia wine route, so you’ll definitely want to know your Shiraz from your Sauvignon Blanc.
Also
Each bathroom has a huge black-and-white picture of Bette Davis on its wall.
