This hotel is perfect for...

What I liked

The suite was very large with a living and dining area, separate bathroom, mezzanine bedroom with an additional en suite toilet. The selection of excellent Ren products included eye cream and moisturiser. The top of the range Hypnos mattress ensured a good night's sleep. Fresh milk, biscuits and fruit was replenished on a daily basis. In the bar there were great cocktails, and the restaurant served top quality British food at pub prices. Staff are attentive and helpful.

What could be better

The location of the hotel remains a mystery to some taxi drivers, so rather than using the Canal Street entrance (which is on a pedestrianised street) we would suggest directing people to the Richmond Street entrance.

Local recommendations

While Mrs Smith is blowing the budget in Harvey Nichols or Selfridge's, Mr Smith can head to the National Football museum in the Urbis building. Afterwards meet for cocktails at the Alchemist – I recommend the Garden Martini – and book at table at Australasia for high-end fusion cuisine at a very reasonable price.

What I liked

Felt like a treat the whole time, but without being pretentious. Very friendly and helpful staff. Lovely bar and restaurant attached. Creative attention to detail in both decor and little finishing touches. Minibar and tuck box – you never know when the midnight urge for Haribo is going to strike. It is on Canal Street, which could potentially be noisy at night, so ear plugs are available from reception. To be honest, if you pick a hotel on Canal Street, you know it isn't going to be like a Carthusian monastery, but it was actually just a gentle re-assuring city hum, helped by there being no traffic on the actual street. Maybe people who go out in the Village are more civilised and up for more fun than the usual town centre brawling? The hotel is minutes away from Piccadilly station, strolling distance from Oxford Road and Deansgate stations, and just a few tram stops from Victoria. Great to have a radio, iPod dock and not just pre-selected radio channels on a tv. I can't believe we were sitting outside by the canal close to midnight without a coat on. Take mozzie cream if the weather forecast is good. It was wonderful to have fresh milk topped up every day in the minibar. Most hotels show contempt for tea by giving you rubbish teabags and UHT, but there was a selection of good 'honest' teas with real milk - someone here is a real 'chaiophile' (I made that word up).

What could be better

In an ideal world, in the future – if money were no object – how about building a rooftop heated swimming pool?! Seriously, we had a great stay and are looking for excuses to come back.

Local recommendations

Great place to stay for nightlife. The Ritz music venue (www.hmvritz.com/) looks a fair way off on the map, but it's only a 10 minute stroll down the canal. And if you are into music, it's only a few more minutes from there up Deansgate to Forsyth's music shop (www.forsyths.co.uk/).

What I liked

Loved everything about this hotel: friendly and helpful staff, gorgeous rooms, comfy bed, lots of luxuries, well-stocked minibar and really cute tuck box in the room! We had the rose petal turndown on arrival, which was a nice touch! Slippers, dressing gown and a rubber duck for the bath – couldn’t fault it and can’t wait to stay again. Room charge to have breakfast delivered but worth it: it arrived on time and had a wide selection – hmmm, fantastic!!

What could be better

The only thing that could have made our stay better is if it had lasted longer. We did not want to go home!

Local recommendations

We enjoyed various cocktails in the Northern Quarter of town. There was so much choice and lots to do.

We waited months before a room became available at Velvet and it was absolutely worth every minute! We stayed in a stunning balcony room, which was larger than expected with a huge bath. A significant amount of energy has gone into the detail of the room, even the corridors have pictures that catch your eye, making a little de-tour a must, whether you’re coming or going. The deep purple shades made it feel warm, cosy and somewhat homely despite the glamour! Staff were incredibly helpful, service was quick and it's so close to anything 'party', it's ridiculous... I wish they could expand soon, as availability is tight. Thanks for making our trip to Manchester perfect!

Great service, and through being a Mr & Mrs Smith member got an automatic room upgrade, which was a pleasant surprise. The room itself was excellent, a mezzanine split level room with all the usual gadgets in abundance. Would stay here again for sure.

My husband and I spent two nights at Velvet. Our room was spacious and opulent, and the hotel staff were very friendly and delivered great service; we arrived quite late on a Friday night and they quickly delivered complimentary tea coffee and biscuits to welcome us. We had breakfast in the hotel's basement restaurant and the food and service were also good. The location of the hotel is buzzing, great for exploring Manchester's many bars and shops; however, it’s not the ideal location for those looking for peace and tranquillity. Given its location, I imagine the rooms on the front of the hotel could be a little noisy, but we had a room at the back. If you were concerned about noise, I would recommend requesting a room at the back and on one of the higher floors. My top tip: an absolute must whilst in Manchester is a visit to Australasia (www.australasia.uk.com), a new bar and restaurant. The food was exceptional with service to match – we asked for our coffee to arrive after desert but it arrived before, and we weren't going to say anything but the waitress immediately spotted it, marched over and sent it back. If you want to eat you must book – we booked a late lunch at 3:30pm and the place was packed; in fact they were turning people away saying the next table was 10:30pm.

Velvet is a hotel that is out of this world – it was beyond words. The location was perfect, the staff were exceptional and everything was first class – would definitely recommend a stay here. One great restaurant to go to whilst in Manchester is the Opus One, which is in the Edwardian Radission Hotel on Peter Street. It is one fab restaurant – the food is fab, the staff are wonderful and it is great value for money.

The hotel was fantastic and the rooms that we stayed in were very luxurious. However, our first room (The King Room) was located directly above the lively bar and this, coupled with the paper thin walls meant that we had a disrupted night's sleep thanks to the amorous activities of our neighbours!!! The staff were very accommodating and moved us up the stairs for our second night, which was a lot quieter and gave us the opportunity to sample the 'double bath', which was amazing. Overall, a great couple of days in Manchester. I recommend Tepen Yaki restaurant in China Town for super food, cooked in front of your eyes, and Gaucho for the most amazing steak that I have ever eaten.
