The Sukhothai

Bangkok, Thailand

Style Stately sanctum

Setting Bustling embassy enclave

Designed to reinvent the heritage of 13th-century Thailand with a clean, contemporary sheen, Bangkok boutique hotel The Sukhothai succeeds in combining classic Thai architecture with decorous modern design. A favourite haunt of playboys and politicos alike, this stunning city-centre boutique hotel is a geometric assemblage of lofty ceilings, black and teak tones and phenomenal ornamental gardens. The food in the Celadon restaurant is worth crossing continents for.

In the know

Our favourite rooms

The Sukhothai’s 12 Garden Suites have romantic balconies overlooking the fairy tale courtyard gardens and lotus ponds. They are sexily splashed with livelier colours than the other rooms, although all rooms are draped in rich Thai fabrics, with plenty of polished teak. The enormous Sukhothai Suite, pied-à-terre to many a passing head-of-state, boasts a fitted kitchen and, most impressively, a grand piano.

Packing tips

Bring your gym kit – the health club, tennis and squash courts and nearby jogging tracks mean there’s no excuse for slacking; also, a good book to pretend to read when you’re celeb-spotting in the bar.

Also

The alfresco massages are recommended: book a poolside treatment in one of the hotel’s open-air pavilions.
