What I liked

Lovely hotel with well decorated modern rooms in a good location friendly and helpful staff. Very quiet rooms with excellent block out blinds necessary when one is jet lagged!

What could be better

Breakfast could have been significantly better and larger for the large amount we were charged. Recommend going out for breakfast.

Local recommendations

Had an amazing meal at Nopa on Divisadero Street, which also has a very lively bar well worth it if you can get a reservation. Jetlag means you often get a city all to yourself we went for a lovely early morning run along the bay from the stadium to the park just before the Golden Gate bridge beautiful run even in the fog. Definitely catch a ball game if you can.

Book ahead to dine at Chez Panisse if you can. A truly fantastic meal and well worth the trip over to Berkeley. We also enjoyed an excellent brunch at Bar Tartine. For picnic supplies, Bakery Tartine had a long line so we walked up to BiRite on 18th instead. Despite the daggy name BiRite is the perfect spot to stock up on goodies before heading over to Golden Gate Park. A wander through the boutiques and cafes of Hayes Valley was really delightful too.

If you love Mexican food then we can recommend Tropisueno (www.tropisueno.com) on Yerba Buena Lane around the corner from the hotel. The restaurant is a taquería during the day and a full service restaurant at night. At lunchtime you view the giant floor to ceiling menu in the entrance, go to the counter and order your food, take a number and pay. The food is then brought to you and you help yourself to a wonderful range of salsa and other condiments, and yes there is a bar too serving margaritas and Mexican beer. You really should try the super burrito with carnitas, just make sure you are hungry.

Great place. Wonderful view from the bedroom. Great design – despite the current trend for the bathroom to be within the bedroom, because luckily one could close some folding doors for more privacy, and the loo was slightly set to the side, preserving a degree of modesty. Staff were helpful if a little earnest/serious – but that could be due to nuances of language difference, that one doesn't expect but ought to. We would certainly return.
