Food and drink at Higher Westcott Farm
- Hotel restaurant Luckily for gastronomes, owner Jo Gossett used to manage a Conran restaurant in London, and has brought her menu-making skills to bear on Higher Westcott Farm’s kitchen. You’ll need to let the hotel know if you’ll be dining when you book (£30 for three courses), and Jo will send you a menu to pick from in advance. You’d be missing a treat not to dine here: Jo’s sublime home-style cooking features ingredients almost entirely sourced from Dartmoor’s farms. Classic Devon afternoon tea (£5) is served daily.
- Dress code Keep it simple and unpretentious – your comfy-cosy shapeless jumpers won’t raise an eyebrow.
- Top table Dining is based around a communal oak table beside the fire.
- Last orders 9.30pm is the last dinner sitting, but Jo is happy to prepare a late-night supper for late arrivals (by arrangement). Both she and Sam are usually around to man the bar until midnight, after which it works on an honour basis.
- Hotel bar There’s a dusky red leather-panelled 50s-style bar in the living room, which offers a wide selection of whiskies and cognacs, as well as a cellar of biodynamic wines (there’s a corkage fee if you bring your own).

Our favourite rooms
All of the farm’s rooms are en-suite and look out over the gardens and the woodland beyond, but the antique oak-beamed Loft Room – the largest and our favourite – has the widest aspect and is the only one with its own bath tub, a roll-top Darlington.
Packing tips
Dartmoor was made for ramblers, so be sure you’ve shoes for getting muddy and a suitably outdoorsy wardrobe.
