Costa Lanta

Krabi, Thailand

Style Zen by sea

Setting Secluded Koh Lanta isle

If you’re into modern design, you'll be seduced by Krabi boutique hotel Costa Lanta's industrial-inspired, tropical-minimal take on barefoot luxury. Simple, elemental villas that embrace the outdoors with retractable walls and see-through ceilings, and a breezy open-air restaurant, create a laid-back retreat on the tip of Krabi province's crowd-free Koh Lanta island.

Food and drink at Costa Lanta

  • Hotel restaurant The airy restaurant, with its towering ceilings and open sides, is sparingly decorated with smooth teak tables, white leather chairs and burnt-orange sunken seats. Designed, like the rest of the resort, by Bangkok architect Duangrit Bunnag, it's a gorgeous place to eat and wile away a few hours. Graze from the Thai menu where local specialities such as red duck curry, pan-fried prawns with tamarind, and crispy fish tossed in spicy chilli lime are treated to a gourmet makeover. Upstairs is a chilled living area and games room.
  • Dress code Your Preen will fit in as easily as a Zimmerman kaftan or casual fisherman pants and vest.
  • Top table Lit by lanterns swaying in the pine trees, the tables by the beach are by far the most romantic.
  • Last orders 10pm for dinner; the bar stays open until midnight.
  • Room service Not available, but the minibar should tide you over till breakfast (served from 7.30am if you're up early feeling peckish).
  • Hotel bar Costa Lanta’s restaurant and bar are one and the same, but there’s also a small outdoor bar where you can sink into a massive bean bag and sip a cucumber martini as you star gaze. Tunes span lounge, deep house and pop with visiting DJs at New Year.

In the know

Our favourite rooms

Your concrete cabana is pared down, uncluttered yet nurturing – there’s not a thatched roof or Buddha statue in sight. A massive low-lying bed takes up most of the space, and there’s something very comforting about sleeping under a billowing mosquito net. The open-roofed bathroom, decked with yummy Thann toiletries, keeps you in touch with nature. Choose rooms 203 or 204 for maximum privacy and uninterrupted sea views.

Packing tips

This is mosquito country so staff are disciplined about spraying your room, but extra repellant can’t hurt. An eye mask, since there aren’t any curtains. Your MacBook for watching DVDs (to keep things mellow there are no TVs in rooms).

Also

Costa Lanta has an open-air beachfront sala where you can unwind with a traditional Thai massage, soothing aromatherapy session or some pressure point-probing reflexology. Private yoga lessons can also be arranged if you need a break from your lounger.
